I can’t believe it! On Thursday (Nov 15) it will be two years since the launch of The Fashion English Bible! This 350-page book is the fruit of two years of research, writing, designing, and hard work (blood, sweat and tears as we’d say in English). And, it all culminated to a book launch which was an amazing night that I will never forget.
¡No me lo puedo creer! ¡El jueves (15 nov) va a hacer dos años desde el lanzamiento de The Fashion English Bible! Este libro de 350 páginas es el fruto de dos años de investigación, escritura, diseño, y trabajo duro (sangre, sudor y lágrimas como decimos en inglés). Y todo desembocó en el lanzamiento que fue una noche increíble que nunca olvidaré.

This book, already in its second edition, is a lovechild of my passions for fashion, teaching, writing and designing. But of course, if it weren’t for my readers, it would be nothing… so thank you to my readers who continue to encourage me.

To celebrate this milestone with you (two years of writing, and now two years of it being published), I thought I’d write two special posts in which I share one of my favorite things from each of the chapters. Below is part one (my fave things in chapters one through five).

The Fashion English Bible: my Favorite Things from CHAPTERS 1-5
1. The Fashion Designer
Ana Locking in her exclusive interview for this book says «I think fashion without a concept behind each collection wouldn’t be fashion. It would just be clothes.» Isn’t this so true?
I love this quote because I feel that every time I see an amazing collection, it’s because there’s a strong concept or inspiration behind it. Bravo to Ana who always produces striking collections!
Ana Locking, en su entrevista exclusiva para el libro dijo, ‘pienso que la moda sin un concepto detrás de cada colección, no sería moda. Sería tan sólo ropa.’ ¿A que tiene razón?
Me encanta esta frase porque siento que cada vez que veo una colección increíble, es porque hay un concepto fuerte o inspiración detrás. ¡Bravo a Ana quien siempre consigue producir colecciones espectaculares!
2. The Fit Model
Meeting and interviewing fashion model Ila Cheyenne was a wonderful experience in which I learned about the fit model‘s perspective in the industry. Having worked as a fit model for big names such as Olivier Theyskens, Ila made it sound like magic when she talked about seeing clothes being created on her body.
Conocer y entrevistar a la modelo de moda, Ila Cheyenne, fue una experiencia encantadora en la que aprendí sobre la perspectiva de la modelo de pruebas dentro de la industria. Habiendo trabajado como modelo de pruebas para grandes nombres como Olivier Theyskens, Ila lo hizo sonar como magia cuando habló de la experiencia de ver ropa creada sobre su cuerpo.
3. The Event Planner
The word «venue«. This is one of my favorite words to teach (because it’s so useful and so common, yet my students hardly ever know what it means). This term means «location where an event takes place». Here’s an example of the word used in an article by Vogue:
La palabra ‘venue’ . Esta es una de mis favoritas que me gusta enseñar (porque es tan útil y tan común, sin embargo mis alumnos tan siquiera saben lo que significa). Este término significa ‘ubicación del evento. Aquí tienes un ejemplo de cómo lo utiliza Vogue en un artículo:

4. The Brand Manager
There are over 600 vocabulary words related to the fashion industry in The Fashion English Bible, and in this chapter I cover the word «edgy« (which is frequently used in the sector). «Edgy» is a cross between «avante guard«, «cool», «new» and «trendy». In this screenshot you’ll see how The Business of Fashion uses this word in an article:
Hay más de 600 términos relacionados con el mundo de la moda en The Fashion English Bible, y en este capítulo explico la palabra ‘edgy’ (que se usa frecuentemente en el sector). ‘Edgy’ es la combinación de ‘vanguardia’, ‘cool’, ‘nuevo’ y ‘de tendencia’. 5. The Fashion Buyer
A fashion buyer’s job is to «procure products for a fashion store». The word «procure» is another one of my faves and is what we call a «false friend». It sounds a lot like the word ‘procurar’ in Spanish (which translates to «to make sure» in English). But, the word «procure» is actually to «obtain» or «acquire». Although I cover many fashion-specific words in this chapter, I’ve also included general English terms that are relevant and useful.
Un/a jefe/a de compras tiene que obtener productos para una tienda de moda. La palabra ‘procure’ es otra de mis favoritas y es lo que llamamos un ‘amigo falso’. Suena como la palabra ‘procurar’ en castellano (que en inglés sería ‘to make sure’). Pero, la palabra ‘procure’ realmente significa ‘obtener’ o ‘adquirir’. Aun que hablo de muchas palabras específicas del mundo de la moda en este capítulo, también he incluido términos generales que son relevantes y útiles.

FASHION ENGLISH
#FashionEnglish lovers, aquí encontraréis todas las palabras resaltadas en rosa en este texto explicadas con detalle:
CLOTHES : recuerda que esta palabra es incontable, nunca puedes decir ‘I have one clothes’. Para hablar solo de una pieza, puedes decir ‘piece of clothing’ o ‘garment’.
STRIKING : adjetivo para decir ‘impresionante’.
FIT MODEL : siempre hay que probar los prototipos en un modelo de pruebas en el proceso de diseño, y en inglés se llama ‘fit model’ y las sesiones de pruebas se llama ‘fitting’.
VENUE : lugar físico donde ocurre el evento/desfile (teatro, IFEMA, jardín, etc.).
EDGY: adjetivo que significa algo entre ‘cool’, ‘de tendencia’ o ‘a la vanguardia’.
AVANTE GUARD: a la vanguardia (realmente esto es francés pero a menudo adaptamos palabras francesas.
PROCURE : obtener, adquirir.
FASHION ENGLISH
