Black Friday – a public holiday in the United States, and the most infamous shopping day of the year. Its history is not so glamorous, and neither is its reputation to be honest…but it’s so popular, that it’s managed to cross the Atlantic and break into stores all across Spain.
Black Friday – un festivo en los EE.UU, y el día de compras más famoso* de todo el año. Su historia no es tan glamurosa, ni su reputación sinceramente…pero es tan popular que ha conseguido cruzar el Atlántico y meterse (de forma forzada) en las tiendas de toda España, y ahora tenemos Black Friday España.

Before I teach you some vocabulary related to this subject, I’d like to give you a bit of cultural background on why this day is so popular in the United States.

Antes de que te enseñe algunos términos relacionado con este tema, me gustaría darte un poco de background cultural sobre por qué este día es tan popular en EE.UU.
Basically… this is what happens:
Básicamente… esto es lo que sucede:
- On the 2nd to last Thursday of every November, we celebrate Thanksgiving (a holiday that is even more important than Christmas for a lot of American families). Today is an incredibly special day that I love because it’s about «being thankful» and spending time with family and friends (all while eating delicious food! YUM!).
El penúltimo jueves de cada noviembre, se celebra Thanksgiving (una fiesta que es incluso más importante que navidad para muchas familias americanas). Hoy es un día increíblemente especial y un día que yo amo por que se trata de ‘dar las gracias’ y pasar tiempo con tu familia y amigos (¡mientras comes comida deliciosa! ¡Ñam!). - Then, the next day is also a public holiday (and in our consumer centric society we now call it Black Friday). Thanksgiving marks the beginning of Christmas season for most Americans which is why they take advantage of this day to start their Christmas shopping.
Después, el día siguiente es festivo también (y en nuestro sociedad tan centrada en el consumidor de hoy en día, lo llamamos Black Friday). Thanksgiving marca el principio de las navidades para muchos americanos y por eso se aprovechan para empezar sus compras navideñas este día. - Some families wake up as early as 3, 4 or 5 am to hit the stores to be the first to get the best discounts on pricey items like TVs, computers, etc. (You’ve probably all seen the stampedes in videos before, right?). Now, stores even open on the evening of Thanksgiving.
Algunas familias se despiertan tan temprano como las 3, 4 o 5 de la madrugada para ser los primeros en conseguir los mejores descuentos en productos caros como televisiones, ordenadores, etc. (Seguramente que habéis visto los vídeos de estampadas, ¿verdad?). Ahora, las tiendas abren incluso la misma tarde de Thanksgiving.
So, now that you know what happens in the country where this day originated, let’s talk about the vocabulary around SALES!
Bien, ahora que sabéis lo que pasa este día en el país donde empezó, ¡hablemos del vocabulario relacionado con REBAJAS!
black friday: vocabulary related to «sales»
SALES : rebajas.
ON SALE : en rebajas. Puedes preguntar por ejemplo «Is this sweater on sale?» (¿Está en rebajas este jerséi?).
IN THE SALE : en rebajas. También puedes utilizar está forma: «This dress is in the sale.»
ON OFFER : la manera británica de decir «on sale».
TO MARK DOWN : verbo para decir ‘rebajar’. «Do you know if you’ll be marking down this coat soon?» (¿Sabes si vais a rebajar este abrigo próximamente?).
MARKED DOWN : rebajado. «We haven’t marked down those heels yet.» (‘Aún no hemos rebajado esos tacones’).
DEAL : ganga/oferta. «What a great deal!» (‘¡Qué buena ganga/oferta!).
BARGAIN : ganga/oferta.
IT’S A STEAL : ¡Está tirado de precio!
DIRT CHEAP : Baratísimo (muy coloquial e informal).
