6 Tips to Learn English Fast

When it comes to Spanish-speaking natives who are striving to learn English, I’ve seen it all—from 3-year-olds who were so good you’d think they were born for it, to forty-somethings who have been taking classes their whole lives but still can’t speak in the past tense correctly.
En cuanto a hispano-hablantes que están intentando aprender inglés, ¡lo he visto todo! —desde niños de 3 añitos que parecen que nacieron para aprender idiomas, a profesionales de 40 y tantos años que llevan toda su vida tomando clases pero que aún no consiguen hablar en el pasado correctamente. 

So, what’s the secret? Do you have to be born with a language-learning talent? Or can you really become fluent with enough determination, no matter how your brain is wired?
Así que, ¿cuál es el secreto? ¿tienes que nacer con un talento para aprender idiomas? ¿O puedes realmente con suficiente determinación, lograr fluidez, a pesar de cómo funcione tu cerebro? 

I’ve taught hundreds of students, and I can tell you this: some of the best English speakers (as a second language) that I’ve ever taught, learned it thanks to their motivation and discipline, and even in some cases never lived abroad!

1. Set a goal

There’s nothing more motivating than setting yourself a deadline, and even more so, working towards a reward. When we get super busy it’s really difficult to find time for personal goals, such as learning a language, and even more so if your boss isn’t demanding this off you 😉 !
No hay nada más motivador que tener una fecha límite, y aún más motivador, trabajar hacia un premio. Cuando nos encotramos hiper ocupados, es difícil encontrar el tiempo para lograr nuestros objetivos personales, como aprender un idioma, y menos si tu jefe no te lo está exigiendo 😉 

So, to keep you going you should:
Así que, para mantener constancia deberías: 

1. Set deadlines to reach certain milestones.
   The most obvious goal would be to obtain a certificate, for example, the Cambridge First Certificate. Or maybe aim to do a Master’s degree in English or some other course in English that requires fluency.
   Poner fechas límites para conseguir pequeñas metas que te llevan a tu objetivo final.
   La meta más obvia sería obtener un certificado, por ejemplo, el Cambridge First Certificate. O quizás realizar un máster en inglés o algún otro curso que requiere un alto nivel de fluidez. 
2. Reward yourself.
   They say life is about the journey, not the destination—which is totally true—but, we are all always working towards something, right? So, promise yourself a nice reward for when you achieve your English goal: maybe a designer handbag, a trip to Bali or some other pricey uber-special prize.
   Prémiate.
   Dicen que la vida se trata de disfrutar del viaje, no solo del destino —y es totalmente cierto—, pero siempre estamos trabajando hacia algo ¿verdad? Así que, prometete a tí mism@ que te vas a premiar algo cuando logres tu objetivo de inglés: quizás un bolso de diseñador, un viaje a Bali u otro premio súper especial.  

2. Create a daily habit

I can’t stress this enough. CREATING A HABIT OF LEARNING EVERY DAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU NEED TO DO. Especially if you want to learn English fast. Not only is it good for your brain, but it’ll accelerate the process.
No puedo enfatizar esto más. CREAR EL HÁBITO DE APRENDER TODOS LOS DÍAS ES LO MÁS IMPORTANTE DE TODO LO QUE NECESITAS HACER. Especialmente si quieres aprender inglés rápido. No solo es bueno para tu cerebro, si no que también acelerará el proceso. 

My recommendation is that you aim for morning study sessions. Before you get tied up in the day with work, sit down and dedicate 30 minutes a day to: studying vocabulary lists and memorizing translation lists. Don’t waste your time studying grammar lessons. Make this time active learning, don’t just sit there and listen to audios.
Mi recomendación es que intentes apartar tiempo por las mañanas para estudiar. Antes de que te lies con el trabajo, siéntate y dedícale 30 minutos al día a: estudiar listas de vocabulario y memorizar listas de traducción. No malgastes el tiempo estudiando gramática. Aprovecha este tiempo para aprender en activo, no simplemente sentarte y escuchar audios. 

If you work in fashion and have an intermediate or advanced level, I recommend using the lists in my book: The Fashion English Bible. Apart from this, my favorite book for English learners is Vaughan’s Translation Booklet.
Si trabajas en la moda y tienes un nivel intermedio o avanzado, te recomiendo las listas que encontrarás en mi libro: The Fashion English Bible. Aparte de esto, mi libro favorito para alumnos del inglés es el libro de Vaughan, Translation Booklet. 

Listen to the audios that the lists come with to ensure correct pronunciation. Read your lists aloud. Repeat, repeat, and repeat. Take notes of your mistakes. Repeat again. Then, review the next day.
Escucha los audios de las listas para asegurar que estás pronunciando correctamente. Lee las listas en algo. Repite, repite, repite y repite. Toma notas de tus errores. Repite otra vez. Luego, repasa al día siguiente. 

3. Listen, listen & listen some more

Now that you have started your day, and have finished your morning study session, you should aim to listen to English throughout the day.  LISTENING IS STEP ONE OF LEARNING A LANGUAGE.
Ahora que has empezado tu día y ya has terminado tu sesión de estudio, deberías de intentar escuchar inglés durante todo el día. ESCUCHAR ES EL PRIMER PASO DE APRENDER UN IDIOMA. 

In the car, on the metro, walking in the street, at your desk while you do mundane tasks, at home while you’re cooking dinner, during your shower, EVERYWHERE.
En el coche, en el metro, andando por la calle, en tu escritorio mientras realizas tareas aburridas, en casa mientras cocinas, mientras te duchas, EN TODAS PARTES. 

Download English podcasts, listen to English radio, watch movies in English (no subtitles — even if you don’t understand!). Do whatever you can do to fill your ears with English, daily!
Descarga podcasts en inglés, escucha la radio en inglés, ve películas en inglés (sin subtítulos — ¡aun que no lo entiendas!). Haz lo que sea por llenar tu oído con inglés, ¡diariamente!

4. Find a teacher you can’t live without

Don’t settle for the mediocre teacher. Find a teacher who makes you want to cry because they’re so tough on you, but who also makes you laugh in class. Find the teacher who you are scared to tell you didn’t do your homework. Find the teacher who makes you speak consistently in every class and corrects your every mistake.
No te conformes con un profesor mediocre. Busca un profesor que te hace llorar de lo duro que es contigo, pero que te hace reír en cada clase. Busca un profesor que temes al decirle que no has hecho tus deberes. Busca un profesor que te hace hablar constantemente en cada clase y que corrige cada error. 

Trust me. It’s better to spend triple the price on a good one who loves their job, than waste your time with someone who is just teaching English to survive. Remember it is an investment in you and your career—because we all know English is indispensable nowadays—so spend the cash on the best teacher of your life!
Creéme. Es mucho mejor gastarte triple el dinero en un profesor que ama su trabajo, que echar tu tiempo a perder con uno que solo enseña inglés para sobrevivir. Recuerda que esto es una inversión en ti y en tu carrera —ya sabemos todos que el inglés es imprescindible hoy en día— ¡así que gástate el dinero en el mejor profesor de tu vida! 

5. Take advantage of online courses!

Online learning can be truly beneficial. And remember, it’s not an A or B situation. You can have face-to-face classes (even on Skype) and also do online courses. These courses will motivate you and give you materials to study in the morning, while your face-to-face classes should be dedicated to helping you with your pronunciation, and your speaking/conversation skills.
La enseñanza online puede ser verdaderamente beneficioso. Y recuerda, no tienes que elegir entre A o B. Puedes tener clases presenciales (incluso a través de Skype) y también participar en cursos online. Estos cursos te motivarán y te darán materiales para estudiar por las mañanas, mientras que las clases presenciales deberían de estar enfocadas a ayudarte a pronunciar bien y mejorar tu ‘speaking’ y habilidades de conversación.

6. Seek opportunities to use it, relentlessly

Okay, now that you have your plan to learn English fast, you need to promise yourself to use it in real-life situations as much as possible. Join English Meetup groups, network with expats, date a native English speaker (joking! no, but really…), and sign up for English immersion programs! Everything counts.
Vale, ahora que tienes tu plan para aprender inglés rápido, tienes que prometerte a ti mismo que lo vas a utilizar en situaciones reales lo máximo posible. Únete a grupos de Meetup en inglés, haz ‘networking’ con expatriados, échate un novio/una novia anglo (¡es broma! o quizás no…), y apúntate a programas de inmersión. Todo cuenta.
