Today, I’m brining you a list of 10 vocabulary phrases or expressions that were used throughout episode 2. You can either print this article or write down the words, and try and identify when each phrase is said in the episode to enrich your #FashionEnglish learning experience!

Making the cut EPISODE 2 — #fashionenglish vocabulary
1. We’re going to put a little gingham in there — ‘Vamos a meterle un poco de guingán (tela de cuadros)’
The contestant, when looking for fabric, spotted a blue and white Gingham pattern. Can you guess which contestant chose this pattern? Here’s a picture of a very similar fabric as the one seen in the series:
El/la concursante, cuando busca un tejido, ve uno con cuadros azules y blancos, tipo guingán. ¿Puedes adivinar quién eligió este patrón? Aquí te dejo una foto de una tela muy similar a la que vemos en la serie.
2. Go big or go home — Da lo todo, o vete a casa.
Someone in the episode says «Go big or go home.» This expression isn’t just used in fashion, it’s also used in other industries and contexts to say that it’s better to give it everything you’ve got (put in as much effort as possible, and in this context, they’re talking about being as creative as possible) — not to settle.
Alguien en el episodio dice ‘da lo todo, o vete a casa.’ Esta expresión no solo se utiliza en la moda, también se usa en otras industrias o contextos para decir que es mejor que lo des todo (poner todo el esfuerzo que puedas, y en este contexto, hablan de ser lo más creativos posible) —no conformarse.
3. Tastemakers — Persona que influye o crea tendencia.
A «tastemaker» is a person who decides or influences trends and what will be ‘fashionable’.
Un ‘tastemaker’ es una persona quien decide o influye las tendencias o lo que llega a ponerse de moda.
4. One look needs to be a showstopper and the other needs to be couture — Uno de los ‘looks’ tiene que ser un espectáculo, y el otro tiene que ser de alta costura.
The word «showstopper» is a great adjective I also listed in my book, The Fashion English Bible. It’s used to say, when a look is so wonderful and attention-grabbing, it makes everyone stop to look at it… so it «stops the show».
La palabra ‘showstopper’ es un adjetivo que también describo en mi libro, The Fashion English Bible. Se utiliza para decir que algo es precioso y que atrae atención, hace que todas las personas presentes giren para mirarlo… así que ‘frena el espectáculo’.
5. Breathtaking — Tan bonito que te deja sin aliento.
The word «breathtaking» was used for one of the looks in this episode. It is a word that can be used for anything that is so beautiful it «takes your breath away».
La palabra «breathtaking» se utilizó para uno de los looks en el episodio. Es una palabra que se puede utilizar para cualquier cosa que sea tan bonito que te ‘quita el aliento’.
6. Flattering — favorecedor.
When something is «flattering» on you, it means it looks good on you, it suits you and it fits well. Remember the difference between «to suit» and «to fit»? «To suit» is ‘favorecer’ and «to fit» is ‘quedar bien, de tamaño.’
Cuando algo es «flattering», significa que te queda bien, que te queda bien de estética y también de tamaño. ¿Te acuerdas de la diferencia entre «to suit» y «to fit»? «To suit» significa ‘favorecer’ y «to fit» es ‘quedar bien, de tamaño.’
7. Fringe is labor intensive — Los flecos requieren mucho trabajo.
One of the looks in this episode had «fringe» (‘flecos’), and someone comments that it requires a lot of work to create a design with fringe, therefore it is «labor intensive».
Uno de los looks del episodio tiene ‘flecos’ y alguien comenta que requiere mucho trabajo trabajar con flecos en un diseño, y por lo tanto es «labor intensive.»
8. This girl doesn’t have a slit — La chica (refiriéndose a lo que tiene puesto) no tiene una abertura.
One of the models walks down the runway and she isn’t able to walk normally because there wasn’t a «slit» (an opening) in the skirt she was wearing.
Una de las modelos desfila y no puede andar normal, porque no tiene una abertura («slit») en la falda que lleva puesto.
9. There are safety pins through it — Hay imperdibles en toda la prenda.
Unfortunately, one of the contestants in this episode really struggles to sew her garments together (can you guess who?). So instead, she uses «safety pins» (imperdibles) to put the looks together.
Desafortunadamente, uno de los concursantes en este episodio le cuesta mucho coser sus prendas (¿sabes quién?). Así que, en vez de coser, utiliza imperdibles para unir los looks.
10. The winner will also win a feature in the CR Fashion Book — El ganador también conseguirá un artículo en CR Fashion Book
What I’d like to highlight from this sentence from the episode is the use of the word «feature.» A «feature», when using it as a noun in the editorial world, means an «article». And by the way, have you had the chance to look at one of the editions of Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book? Definitely worth it 😉
Lo que me gustaría recalcar en esta frase que se dijo en el episodio es el uso de la palabra «feature.» Un «feature», cuando lo utilizamos en el mundo editorial, se refiere a un ‘artículo.’ Y por cierto, ¿has tenido la oportunidad de leer una de las ediciones de CR Fashion Book de Carine Roitfeld? Definitivamente merece la pena.
