Just like with the previous episodes, I’ve created a list of 10 vocabulary words or expressions that were used throughout the episode (this time I consolidated episodes 9 & 10). The terms you will find are all fashion-related and very commonly used. I hope you enjoy learning this list while watching the show!

Making the cut EPISODES 9 & 10 — #fashionenglish vocabulary
1. Popup shop
A popup shop is something you’ve probably already heard of as it has recently been trending more and more in Spain. It’s the idea of opening up a temporary shop (either for days, or months) and it allows designers to gain visibility without having to invest in a permanent retail space.
Una tienda ‘popup’ es probablemente un concepto que ya conoces, especialmente porque es una tendencia que estamos viendo cada vez más en España. Consiste en abrir una tienda temporal (puede ser durante días, o meses) y permite a los diseñadores a ganar visibilidad sin tener que invertir en un espacio permanente de ‘Retail’.
2. Upscale
Upscale refers to something ‘high-end’ or ‘luxury’.
«Upscale» se refiere a algo de alta gama o de lujo.
3. Sewing needle
Aguja de coser.
4. In-house tailoring
In episode 9, one of the contestants brought on an in-house tailor to be present at the popup shop and to adjust garments for the customers. The concept of «in-house tailor» is basically when you have a seamstress/tailor at the shop, like you find in many luxury stores.
En el episodio 9, uno de los concursantes trae a un sastre para tenerle presente en el ‘popup shop’ y ajustar prendas para los clientes. El concepto de «in-house tailor» es básicamente tener un sastre o costurera en la tienda, como sueles encontrar en tiendas de lujo.
5. Place orders for garments
«To place an order» is another way of saying «to order».
«To place an order» significa ‘hacer un pedido’.
6. Play dress up
During the popup shops, one of the designers encourages the visitors and says «go ahead, try it on, play dress up!» The idea of «playing dress up» comes from a game that children play, when they take their parents clothes, wear them, and pretend to be somebody else.
Durante los «popups», uno de los diseñadores anima a las visitantes y dice «go ahead, try it on, play dress up!» (‘adelante, pruébatelo, juega a ‘dress up’). La idea de jugar a «dress up» viene de el juego que juegan los niños, cuando cogen la ropa de sus padres, se la ponen, y fingen que son otras personas.
7. Pencil skirt
A «pencil skirt» is a fitted, tube skirt that gets more narrow towards the bottom and the hem is normally around the knees.
Un «pencil skirt» es una falda de tubo -o falda lápiz- (se va haciendo cada vez más estrecha hacia abajo y el bajo normalmente cae sobre las rodillas.
8. Business pitch / to pitch
A «business pitch» is essentially a presentation to convince your audience of the viability of your business, normally with the aim of receiving investment. And, the verb «to pitch» is, in this context, «to give the presentation».
Un «business pitch» es esencialmente una presentación para convencer a la audiencia de la viabilidad de tu negocio, normalmente con el objetivo de recibir inversión. Y, el verbo «to pitch», en este contexto, es ‘dar el discurso’.
9. Expanding its edit
Amazon fashion director, Christine Beauchamp, asks one of the designers if they would «expand the edit». «To edit» normally means «prepare (written material) for publication by correcting, condensing, or otherwise modifying it,» but in this context, as a noun, the «edit» is referring to the collection.
La directora de moda de Amazon, Christine Beauchamp, pregunta a uno de los diseñadores si estarían dispuestos a ‘expandir el «edit» de la colección’. «To edit» normalmente significa ‘preparar material escrita, corregirla, condensarla, etc. para publicarla’, pero en este contexto, como sustantivo, la palabra «edit» se refiere a la colección.
10. My lineup looks incredible
When one of the designers finishes preparing the looks for the final fashion show, they say «my lineup looks incredible». The word «lineup» in fashion refers to the list of models and the order in which they are organized to present the collection. The lineup is especially important because it is how designers tell the «story» of their collection, from beginning to end. Deciding on the correct order of the looks is essential.
Cuando uno de los diseñadores termina de preparar sus looks para el desfile final, dice ‘mi «lineup» se ve increíble’. En la moda, la palabra «lineup» se refiere a la lista de modelos y el orden en el que van a salir para presentar la colección. El «lineup» es especialmente importante porque es la manera en la que el diseñador cuenta la historia de su colección, desde el principio hasta el final. Es esencial tener este aspecto claro.
