Making the cut EPISODE 7 — #fashionenglish vocabulary
1. Backdrop
At the beginning of the episode the 5 contestants discover that the challenge involves a photoshoot for which they need to choose their «backdrop». This word is used in theatre, cinema, fashion, etc… to refer to the background that you set up for an image or scene.
Al principio del episodio los 5 concursantes descubren que el reto incluye una sesión de fotos para la que tiene que elegir su «backdrop» (o ‘fondo’). Esta palabra se utiliza en teatro, cine, moda, etc…. para hablar del fondo que preparas para una imagen o escena.
2. A vinyl vest, it’s very Courrèges!
When someone in the episode puts on a vinyl vest, another person says «it’s very Courrèges!», referencing the French fashion designer from the 60’s, André Courrèges, who was known for his modernism and futurism.
Cuando alguien en el episodio se pone un chaleco de vinilo, el otro dice «It’s very Courrèges!», haciendo referencia al diseñador francés de los años 60, André Courrèges, quien es conocido por so modernismo y futurismo.
3. Bomber jacket
One of the contestants created an oversized bomber jacket for this challenge, a classic in fashion (my personal favorite variation is this one by Acne).
Uno de los concursantes creó una chaqueta tipo ‘bomber’ oversized para este reto, un clásico en la moda (mi versión favorita es este diseño de la marca Acne).
4. Fitting a plus-size model is difficult
Remember what the verb «to fit» means? It means to try something on and adjust it to your measurements. And, the noun «fitting» is the session that designers have in the fashion world, to try their designs on the models.
¿Te acuerdas del significado de «to fit»? Se utiliza para decir ‘probarte algo y ajustarlo a tus medidas’. Y el sustantivo «fitting» es la sesión de pruebas que suelen tener los diseñadores en el mundo de la moda, para probar sus diseños sobre los modelos.
5. Mimicking a print
The verb «to mimic» is to «imitate».
El verbo «to mimic» significa ‘imitar’.
6. Colorblock blazer
«Colorblock» refers to a design style in which there are «contrasting blocks or panels of solid, typically bright colour». And, do you remember what «blazer» means? As we saw in episode 3, it means ‘chaqueta de sport’.
«Colorblock» se refiere a un estilo de diseño en el que hay bloques de colores contrastando, normalmente colores brillantes. Y… ¿te acuerdas del significado de «blazer»? Como vimos en el episodio 3, significa ‘chaqueta de sport’.
7. A skinny cigarette pant
A cigarette pant is usually straight down to the ankle, and a «skinny cigarette» is a bit more fitted than usual, but not as tight as skinny jeans.
Un pantalón tipo «cigarette» (cigarrillo) suele ser recto hasta el tobillo, mientras que un pantalón «skinny cigarette» es un poco más ajustado que lo normal, pero sin ser tan apretado como un «skinny jean».
8. Elastic waistband in the pant
«Waistband» is «a strip of cloth forming the waist of a garment such as a skirt or a pair of trousers».
«Waistand» es la ‘cintura’ de una prenda, como una falda o unos pantalones.
9. The slitting is good!
As we saw in episode 2, the word «slit» refers to an opening in a skirt. And here, one of the judges says «slitting», referring to the process or the action of creating the slit.
Como vimos en el episodio 2, la palabra «slit» se refiere a la abertura en una falda. Y aquí, uno de los jueces dice «slitting,» refiriéndose al proceso o el acto de crear las aberturas.
10. Very fashion-forward, very editorial
Another judge in this episode admires one of the looks saying that it is very «fashion-forward» and «editorial», meaning that it looks like it really belongs in the fashion world and isn’t just something nice and stylish, rather something you’d see in a magazine like Vogue.
Otro juez en el episodio admira uno de los looks diciendo que es ‘fashion-forward’ y ‘editorial’, y lo que quiere decir es que es un diseño que realmente parece que pertenece al mundo de la moda y no es simplemente algo bonito y estiloso, si no, algo que verías en una revista tipo Vogue.
